Did you get that?

One of the most frequent questions I am asked when photographing sports is; did you get that shot? This is most often referring to a shot, a hit, or often a foul or infraction of some kind. It is very difficult to explain that in a still photograph the action is stopped; so unless you capture a foot right on a line as a player lands, it can be very hard to reflect an infraction via a still image. This past week, while shooting the Ithaca vs. Union game, I had the opportunity to capture a clear infractions. In this image the ball is a second away from reaching the receiver and the defender has prematurely grabbed the arm of the receiver which is clearly pass interference. In this instance it turned out to be a no call, but my image could in fact prove the infraction. Nevertheless, the game went on, the athletes played hard, and it was a great competition. I add this disclaimer. This is in no way a criticism of the referees as they have a challenging job, and honestly no one understands better the challenges of seeing things from all angles than a photographer. Happy football season to all, and I hope your team wins!

In fact, Matt, I did. On Wednesday I nailed this shot:
She was credited with a header, but I see more shoulder blade on the ball than head.

I should expand on this. These photos are RARE. I’ve gotten a small handful in the 8 years I’ve been doing this (a couple of last-second jumpers [just one buzzer beater], a few nice slapshots).
After four-plus years my favorite sports photo of all time has to be the one I have of Jack Skille (UW-Madison hockey player) who scored the lone goal of a triple overtime game in Green Bay.
Check the photo, the puck is in the goal, but hasn’t hit the back netting; the water bottle is still in its place on the top of the goal. And if you look at those in the stadium, they haven’t had the chance to react yet.

Good stuff Ryan!! These shots are always fun, probably only to us photogs… ha!

Perhaps. We strive to beat that picture we took last night, last week, last year, etc. It makes the work fun and keeps us going.

Great shots Ryan. Another aspect of the “did you get that” is that as photpgraphers using SLR cameras, we don’t see what we actually shot since the mirror is up blocking our view during the capture. There are many I know I didn’t get because I actually saw it happen.

I should read closer. I now realize that Matt made the original post. That too is a great shot.
Here is a missed called. No face mask penalty called.

Great point Dan! You are so right, in addition to the closing of the mirror, we also give up our peripheral vision and see only what is in the lens. While it would be a dream to shoot the Ohio State Buckeyes, I am not sure I would be willing to give up that wide angle of my full perspective from my own eyes. Sometimes it is great to just be a fan and not be impartial on the sidelines.

So you guys know, you can use the html IMG tag to put your photos in. Dan – your photo didn’t come up – even as a link.
